Railway transport--

The picture shows the only one ("Red 003") Tiger (P) operational model with turret facing rearwards, though the second tank just behind is a Panther Ausf D equipped with a Pz IV turret.

German Tiger I Tanks, fresh from the production line travel by rail to the Eastern Front in the Spring of 1943

Transporting Tigers by rail required removing the outer wheels of the interleaved wheel system and replacing its normal tread with special narrow tread so the tank would fit on the rail car. It was a labor intensive, time consuming special handling process repeated for every shipment and, again, for every arrival.

The tracks of the Tiger were so large that transport by rail was not possible. So, two types of tracks were created, the Marchkette (operational) Glesketten, fitted near to the operation area, and the transport ones (Verladekette), quite narrower (520-725 mm/20.47-28.54 in). The change of tracks also imposed the removal of the outer roadwheels. The normal tracks allowed the lowering of the ground pressure to just 1.11 kg/cm2, and was made of 96 unlubrificated soft steel links. The Verladekette had a 1.545 kg/cm2 ground pressure.

15cm sFH 18 Panzerhaubitze III/IV, "Hummel" (bumble bee), 100 produced by 12 May 1943 along with 157 ammunitin carriers built on the same chassis. The hull was a lengthened Pz.IV with the engine moved forward and the final drive of Pz.III. First seeing action at Kursk with Panzer pisions.

These damaged Tigers of SS-sPzAbtl. 102 were located at Braine, Normandy, France. One survives at the Samour museum.
